Social media platform X has promised to speed up the removal of hate speech and extremist material in the United Kingdom following mounting pressure from regulators and campaign groups.
Company representatives met British officials this week to discuss concerns surrounding harmful content, including posts linked to terrorism, antisemitism and organised extremist networks. The platform said it plans to increase moderation resources focused specifically on UK based reports and improve co operation with law enforcement agencies.
The announcement follows criticism that X has struggled to respond quickly enough to dangerous material since major changes to its moderation systems were introduced in recent years. Several advocacy organisations claimed harmful posts often remained visible for too long, allowing misinformation and extremist narratives to spread widely online.
A spokesperson for the company said the safety of users remained a priority and that new systems would help identify and remove illegal content more efficiently. The firm also stated that accounts promoting terrorism or violent extremism would face permanent suspension under updated enforcement policies.
The UK government welcomed the pledge but indicated it would continue monitoring the platform closely under the country’s Online Safety framework. Ministers have repeatedly warned technology companies that they must take stronger responsibility for preventing online abuse and protecting vulnerable users.
Civil liberties groups meanwhile cautioned against over moderation, arguing that social media firms must balance public safety with freedom of expression. Experts say the challenge for X will be proving that faster enforcement can be achieved consistently and transparently without restricting legitimate political debate.
