Uber has begun testing a new premium robotaxi service in San Francisco, marking a major step towards fully autonomous ride-hailing.
The trial, developed in partnership with Nuro, is currently limited to select Uber employees. The vehicles operate in autonomous mode but still include a human safety driver as a backup during testing.
The service uses high-end electric vehicles equipped with advanced sensors, cameras, radar, and lidar technology, allowing them to navigate city streets without direct human control. The testing phase is focused on evaluating how the vehicles perform in real-world conditions, particularly during pick-ups and drop-offs, which remain one of the most complex challenges in autonomous transport.
Uber has committed to deploying thousands of these vehicles in the coming years, with a wider public launch expected later in 2026. The move reflects a broader strategy to integrate autonomous driving into its platform without building the technology entirely in-house.
The introduction of a premium robotaxi service also suggests Uber is targeting higher-end users, offering a more refined experience compared to standard ride-hailing options.
