As layoffs loom on May 20, morale inside Meta is at a breaking point—employees say almost everyone is unhappy except top executives. The company plans to cut about 10% of its workforce (around 8,000 jobs), adding to tens of thousands of previous layoffs, but job cuts are only part of the problem.

Workers point to widening pay gaps, forced role changes, legal setbacks, and new tracking software used to train AI as reasons the culture feels worse than ever. Many feel disconnected from the company’s mission—and fear they’re helping build systems that could replace them.

Some employees are even hoping to be laid off for the severance package, while others are pushing to unionize, especially in the UK. Meanwhile, Meta continues to post huge profits and spend heavily on AI, deepening frustration among staff who feel scrutinized, underpaid, and expendable.
