Google has officially revealed a major AI transformation for its search engine alongside the return of smart glasses during its annual Google I/O 2026 event in California.

The company announced that Google Search will now become far more AI-driven, allowing users to type longer, more natural questions instead of relying on traditional keyword-based searches. The update is powered by Google’s newest AI model, Gemini 3.5.

According to Google executives, search results will become more visual, conversational and interactive. Users will be able to ask follow-up questions, generate plans, create spreadsheets, schedule events and perform other actions directly from search results through Gemini integration.

Elizabeth Reid, Google’s head of Search, described the changes as the biggest transformation to Google Search in nearly 30 years. Users who still prefer the classic search experience will be able to switch back to the traditional “Web” tab featuring standard blue links.

Google also revealed that its AI chatbot mode inside Search has seen rapid growth over the past year, with AI-focused search queries doubling every quarter since launch.

Alongside the search overhaul, Google announced a return to smart glasses through new partnerships with Samsung, Warby Parker and Gentle Monster.

The upcoming AI-powered glasses will feature built-in cameras, voice controls and direct access to Gemini. Users will be able to take photos, record videos and interact with AI hands-free through voice commands.

The launch marks Google’s second attempt at smart eyewear after the original Google Glass failed in 2014 and became widely mocked online. However, changing attitudes toward wearable AI devices and the success of Ray-Ban Meta glasses suggest the market may now be more prepared for the technology.

Google additionally teased a more advanced smart-glasses project known internally as “Project Aura,” which is expected to include in-lens displays and deeper augmented reality features.

The company also introduced new AI agents capable of autonomously researching information, managing emails, planning trips and assisting users across Gmail, Calendar and other Google services.

With AI becoming central to search, smartphones, wearables and productivity tools, Google is clearly positioning Gemini as the core of its future ecosystem.
