Google Smart Glasses Return

Google is officially bringing smart glasses back into the spotlight. During Google I/O 2026, the company revealed a new generation of AI-powered smart eyewear built on its Android XR platform. The announcement marks Google’s biggest wearable technology push since the original Google Glass project over a decade ago.

The new glasses are designed in partnership with Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster. Unlike the bulky designs of earlier smart glasses, these new models focus on lightweight frames, fashion-friendly looks, and everyday usability. Google says the glasses will allow users to access Gemini AI hands-free through voice commands and touch controls.

Google demonstrated features such as live translation, navigation, messaging, photo capture, and real-time AI assistance. Users can ask questions about what they are seeing, receive directions while walking, and interact with apps without pulling out a phone. Some versions will include audio-only support, while future models may feature visual displays directly in the lenses.

The company appears determined to avoid the mistakes made with Google Glass, which faced criticism over privacy concerns, limited functionality, and its high price. This time, Google is focusing heavily on practical everyday use and more natural AI interactions. The rise of competing products like Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses has also helped create a more accepting market for wearable AI devices.

Google says the first Android XR smart glasses are expected to launch later this year. As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, smart eyewear could become one of the next major battlegrounds in consumer technology, with Google aiming to compete directly against Meta, Apple, and other wearable tech companies.
