UK Government Ban Deep Fake AI from Making ‘Nudification’ Content

The UK government is planning new laws to crack down on artificial-intelligence tools that can create fake explicit images of people without their permission. These tools, often called “nudification” or deepfake apps, use AI to digitally alter photos so that someone appears naked or sexually exposed, even though the image is completely fabricated.

Ministers say the growing availability of this technology poses a serious threat to personal privacy and safety. Victims can experience distress, embarrassment and long-term harm, particularly when manipulated images are shared online or used to harass, blackmail or shame individuals. Campaigners warn that women and girls are most often targeted, but anyone can be affected.

Under the proposed changes, creating or sharing these non-consensual AI-generated images would become a criminal offence. The government argues that existing laws do not adequately cover this type of abuse, especially when the images are produced using artificial intelligence rather than traditional photo editing. By updating the law, officials hope to close legal loopholes and give police stronger powers to take action.

The issue has gained attention as AI tools become cheaper, faster and easier to use. Some apps require only a single photo to generate a realistic-looking fake image, making misuse more accessible than ever before. Experts say this rapid technological progress has outpaced regulation, leaving many people unprotected.

The proposed ban is part of a wider effort to regulate artificial intelligence responsibly in the UK. While the government has said it wants to support innovation and technological growth, it has also emphasized that AI should not be used in ways that cause harm or violate basic rights. Protecting consent and personal dignity is a key priority in these plans.

If approved, the legislation would place the UK among the first countries to directly outlaw AI-generated sexual deepfakes. Lawmakers hope the move will send a strong message that abusing technology to exploit others will not be tolerated, and that AI must be used ethically and responsibly.
