WhatsApp Tests Paid Subscription Focused on Customisation

WhatsApp is testing a new premium subscription, signalling a shift towards paid features across its platform.

The optional service introduces a range of upgrades, including custom themes, app icons, ringtones, and expanded chat organisation tools. However, the majority of these features are cosmetic rather than functional, meaning the core messaging experience remains unchanged for users.

The subscription, reportedly priced at around €2.49 (approximately £2.10) per month in early tests, is currently being rolled out to a limited number of users as the company gathers feedback.

Unlike traditional premium services, the plan does not introduce major new capabilities. Instead, it focuses on personalisation and minor usability improvements, such as the ability to pin more chats or organise conversations more effectively.

The move forms part of a wider strategy by parent company Meta to introduce subscription models across its platforms. As competition grows and advertising models evolve, the company is increasingly exploring new ways to generate revenue while keeping its core services free.

The test highlights a broader shift in social media, where platforms are experimenting with paid tiers that offer enhanced experiences without restricting basic features. For users, the key question will be whether cosmetic upgrades alone are enough to justify a monthly cost.
