Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold may have been a bold and largely successful experiment, but it looks like that chapter could be coming to a close.

According to a new report from Korean outlet Donga, Samsung is preparing to halt sales of the TriFold in its home market just three months after launch. While the device is still available in the U.S., sales there are expected to continue only until existing inventory runs out, with no indication of further production.

For such a novel device—the first tri-folding phone from Samsung to reach the mass market—the TriFold performed impressively. It earned strong reviews across the board, and early demand was high enough that it quickly sold out after launch (though limited production likely played a role). Even with its steep $2,899 price tag, interest remained solid. In hands-on use, the standout feature is its expansive display when fully unfolded, which delivers both impressive size and quality.

However, the same innovation that made the TriFold stand out also made it difficult to sustain as a commercial product. According to Donga’s industry sources, production costs were so high that Samsung couldn’t turn a profit on the device—even at its premium price. Rising component costs, particularly for memory chips, have only made matters worse.

Insiders cited in the report suggest the TriFold was never meant to be a major revenue driver. Instead, it served primarily as a showcase of Samsung’s engineering capabilities and a signal of where foldable technology could go next.
