Samsung Galaxy S26 Set to Gain AirDrop-Style File Sharing Feature

Samsung is preparing to introduce a major quality-of-life upgrade to its Galaxy S26 line-up, bringing Apple-style AirDrop functionality to its devices through an update to its Quick Share system.

The feature will allow Galaxy users to send files directly to iPhones, iPads and Macs without relying on third-party apps or workarounds. It marks a significant step towards bridging the long-standing gap between Android and Apple ecosystems, where file sharing has traditionally been limited or cumbersome.

Rather than adopting Apple’s AirDrop itself, Samsung is expanding its existing Quick Share feature to enable cross-platform compatibility. Once rolled out, users will be able to share photos, videos and documents seamlessly between Galaxy and Apple devices, provided visibility settings are enabled on both sides.

The update is expected to begin with the Galaxy S26 series before expanding to other Samsung devices, reflecting a broader push across the industry to improve interoperability. Google has already taken similar steps with its Pixel devices, signalling a shift towards more open file-sharing standards.

For users, the change could remove one of the most persistent frustrations in smartphone use: transferring files between different platforms. Whether sharing photos with friends or moving documents between work devices, the process is set to become far more straightforward.

The move also carries wider implications for the mobile industry. As ecosystems become less closed, companies may be forced to compete more on features and performance rather than lock-in. That raises a key question: if seamless sharing becomes standard, what will keep users tied to a single platform?

Samsung’s update suggests the answer may lie less in exclusivity and more in experience.
