Lamborghini Shifts Away from Pure Electric Luxury Cars.

Lamborghini has cancelled plans for its first fully electric model, the Lanzador, originally slated for production around 2028. CEO Stephan Winkelmann confirmed the decision in recent interviews. He described customer interest in all-electric supercars as “close to zero” and developing full EVs as an “expensive hobby” that would prove financially irresponsible toward shareholders, customers, employees, and their families.

The company now pivots to plug-in hybrids. The Lanzador will launch as a plug-in hybrid in 2029. By the end of the decade, all four Lamborghini models will feature hybrid powertrains rather than two full electrics as previously announced.

This move reflects broader trends in the luxury segment. High-end buyers prize the emotional appeal of roaring V8 and V12 engines, which electric motors lack. Winkelmann noted that while Lamborghini stands ready for electric manufacturing, the market acceptance curve remains low.

For enthusiasts who view a supercar purchase as an extension of personal identity, this shift feels familiar. It echoes choices in personal careers where passion sometimes overrides trends. Other luxury marques face similar pressures, yet Lamborghini prioritises customer demand over aggressive electrification timelines.

The decision safeguards financial stability amid uncertain EV demand in the premium space. It raises a pointed question: could this retreat signal a wider slowdown in luxury EV adoption, or does it simply highlight the unique expectations of supercar owners.
