Vodafone has struck a partnership with Amazon’s Project Kuiper to extend reliable 4G and 5G coverage into challenging territories. The agreement taps Kuiper’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation to deliver high-speed backhaul for mobile base stations in remote areas of Europe and Africa.
Operators often face steep costs and logistical hurdles when deploying fibre or microwave links to isolated masts. Kuiper addresses this by providing low-latency, high-bandwidth connections from space directly to cellular sites. Vodafone plans to connect dispersed towers back to core networks, improving service consistency for customers in rural zones or regions with difficult terrain.
The rollout begins in Germany during 2026, with expansion across Africa through Vodacom operations. Speeds could reach 1 Gbps download and 400 Mbps upload in supported setups, far surpassing many traditional solutions in underserved locations.
This move complements Vodafone’s existing efforts in satellite connectivity. It reflects a broader industry shift toward hybrid networks that blend terrestrial infrastructure with orbital assets.
