Tesla Shifts Full Self-Driving to Subscription-Only Model

Tesla is changing how customers access its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, moving to a subscription-only model from 14 February 2026. The company will no longer offer FSD as a one-off purchase, requiring drivers to pay a monthly fee to continue using the feature.

Previously, buyers could either pay an upfront fee of around $8,000 (£6,300) or subscribe monthly. Under the new system, cancelling the subscription will mean losing access to FSD, even though the vehicle itself remains the same.

While Tesla has not given a detailed explanation, analysts suggest the move will lower the barrier to entry for customers, generate more predictable recurring revenue, and give the company greater flexibility as the software evolves under regulatory scrutiny.

Despite its name, Full Self-Driving does not provide fully autonomous driving. It remains a Level 2 driver-assistance system, meaning drivers must stay alert and be ready to take control at all times.

Reactions have been mixed. Some see the change as a natural step towards software-based services in cars, while others argue it weakens the idea of vehicle ownership by placing core features behind a paywall.

Tesla says existing customers who already purchased FSD outright will keep access under current terms, though further details are still expected.
