Technology giant Sony is facing a £2 billion lawsuit in the United Kingdom over allegations that it has overcharged customers through its PlayStation digital marketplace. The claim centres on the pricing structure of the PlayStation Store and whether the company abused its market position.
The case has been brought before the Competition Appeal Tribunal and relates specifically to digital game purchases and in game content sold via Sony’s PlayStation platform. The claimant argues that Sony imposes a commission of up to 30 per cent on developers and publishers, costs which are allegedly passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices.
Lawyers representing millions of UK PlayStation users contend that Sony’s control over the digital ecosystem leaves customers with limited alternatives. Because digital titles must be purchased through the PlayStation Store for use on the console, the lawsuit claims that consumers are effectively locked into a closed marketplace.
