European regulators have launched an investigation into Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, over concerns about safety, misinformation and the misuse of deepfakes. The move highlights the EU’s determination to apply its digital rules to high-profile AI systems, particularly those linked to influential online platforms.
Grok’s integration with X places it at a sensitive intersection between generative AI and social media. Designed to be less constrained than rival chatbots, it draws on real-time content from the platform. That approach has helped it stand out, but it has also raised questions about moderation, safeguards and how easily synthetic content could spread at scale.
Deepfakes sit at the centre of the EU’s concern. Tools that can convincingly generate fake images, voices or videos already threaten public trust, particularly during elections and geopolitical crises. Regulators are now seeking to limit harm before such content becomes harder to contain.
The investigation reflects a broader regulatory shift under the EU’s AI Act and Digital Services Act, which push companies to address risks early. For Musk and other AI developers, the message is clear: innovation must now move in step with accountability, especially in markets where trust and safety carry legal weight.
