ChatGPT is rapidly approaching a major milestone. OpenAI says its AI chatbot now has more than 900 million weekly active users, up from 700 million in September 2025 and more than double the 400 million users recorded in February 2025.
In addition to user growth, Open AI reports that ChatGPT now has over 50 million consumer subscribers, alongside 9 million business subscribers — a fourfold increase since September.
Explosive Growth in Less Than a Year
ChatGPT’s adoption curve continues to outpace nearly every competing AI platform. While rival AI company Anthropic says usage of its Claude chatbot has grown significantly, it has not disclosed specific user numbers.
The scale of ChatGPT’s growth highlights how deeply generative AI has become embedded in everyday digital life, making it one of the fastest-adopted consumer technologies in history.
Investment and Business Expansion
OpenAI also confirmed a revised investment structure involving several major technology companies:
- Nvidia: $30 billion
- SoftBank: $30 billion
- Amazon: $50 billion
Together, these investments contribute to OpenAI’s current valuation of approximately $730 billion, according to the company.
Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced a new $8 “Go” subscription tier that includes ads, expanding its monetization strategy while keeping a free version available.
ChatGPT Leads the AI Chatbot Market
With its massive user base, ChatGPT continues to dominate the AI chatbot space, significantly outperforming competitors such as Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude.
Its rapid expansion has fuelled optimism about AI’s productivity potential while also intensifying discussions around responsible AI use, accuracy, and the risks of hallucinated or incorrect responses.
Why It Matters
ChatGPT’s near-billion-user reach signals a turning point for artificial intelligence:
- AI tools are no longer niche or experimental
- Conversational AI is becoming a default digital interface
- Public expectations around AI reliability and responsibility are rising
As generative AI becomes more deeply woven into work, education and daily life, ChatGPT’s growth offers a clear snapshot of where the future of human–computer interaction is headed.
